ARTISTS AND RESEARCH

Sara Fanelli [1]

Combining hand drawn elements with textured cut outs was in part inspired by Sara Fanelli's collages, especially the bold shapes combined with quite finely drawn whiskers and eyes- I think the head shapes for my mice were also inspired by her elongated and misshapen animals. I would like my final olio piece to capture the surreal playfulness that Fanelli captures in her work.

Louise Lockhart [2]

Louise Lockhart [3]
I also think Louise Lockhart uses both cut-out forms and line in a bold and interesting way- and I am especially interested in her vintage- inspired colour palettes. Her depiction of shop fronts and food I find particularly lovely, and my thumbnails of tinned food I think would suit this kind of aesthetic (as suggested by George in a tutorial, something that I may develop further for 'The Unseen 5' rise publication) . I think the handmade aspect of her work is also something that I would like to explore and emphasis within my own drawings.

Frida Khalo [4]

Maybe not in style but in content and composition I definitely thought of Frida Khalo's 'What the water gave me' when I was drawing mice in baths! I think this painting is so intimate and  intriguing, and the fact that your eyes are drawn all over the painting to different little scenes encouraged me to try to include different interactions happening in my illustration.  This piece also plays with scale in a surreal way which I found influenced some of my later thumbnail ideas.

Saul Bass [5]

Henri Matisse [6]

Henri Matisse [7]

Again, the bold cut out shapes that I used were also influenced by artists such as Saul Bass and Matisse, especially when developing my final rough idea with the mice in the bath tub. Eventually I think I struck a balance between incorporating handprinted/hand drawn qualities with digital cut outs.

Me!

Me
I wanted to explore themes that I enjoy drawing and that I am interested in, like my moon ink drawings influenced my moon idea for the front cover and my children book influenced the other cover idea.

I bought some gouache to experiment with for the front cover, so I thought I would include my first ever gouache paintings. The elephant is almost a colour rough for the elephant cover I chose to progress.
